ABOUT

SATOYAMA DESIGN

We are SATOYAMA Design based in Keihoku, the deep mountainous area in Kyoto.
We are a creative agency, and our team consists of members who have relocated from big metropolitan cities like Tokyo, and Kyoto. Member of Satoyama Design have moved to Keihoku since 2013, and has special skills such as design, art, photography, editorial, interpretation, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, and so on.
We utilize our experiences and expertize nurtured in urban areas to revitalize the rural community.
We are not designing for the sake of design, but to design the community itself. What we are calling “Social Impact Design” ranges in activities from helping the community tourism for the mountainous areas that are decreasing in population, to product design, manufacturing, event planning, creating new businesses, and deeply rooting ourselves in the community.

Why
KEIHOKU ?

Keihoku is a mountainous area located north in one-hour-drive from the city of Kyoto.
93% of this region is made up of forests, and has long been a supplier of wood to the old capital of Kyoto.
Recently, Keihoku has attracted many youngsters seeking a more natural way of life to move in. This is where a new life style is being created by mingling the old and new together.
On the other hand, the community has many issues, such as declining forestry, damage on crop by wild animals (Keihoku is more populated by deer than humans!), and depopulation with lower birthrate and aging.
Zooming out of Keihoku, these problems faced in this region is a microcosm for Rural Japan.  Therefore, if we could show the way of problem-solving here, our trials can be shared with other regions in Japan for a better social change.

◎Our goal

Satoyama, in Japanese describes a natural environment where people and the natural ecosystems coexist over history.
We propose a new way of lifestyle of Satoyama model enablilng nature conservation and social goodness coexist
while living closer to nature and traditional culture, which we call “Satoyama Model”.

Our Specialities

Community

Empowerment

Members of Satoyama Design have developed expertise during their career in Tokyo and Kyoto, and are committed to the bottom-up community revitalization by moving to a rural area. Through daily life, we visualize the issues faced and potential resources needed, while building a partnership carefully among the government, the chamber of commerce, craft artists, farmers, forestry workers, shops, and accommodations, to enhance mutual value.

Various Professional

Skills

Since our members have specific skills such as design, photography, and languages, that we have been able to deliver services that are necessary for problem-solving, and to organize events and tourism that the community never tried before. Also, we implement various education program regarding design, guiding, language learning for domestic and international students.

Community Based

Tourism

The depopulated Keihoku was not in shape to welcome international tourists, until Satoyama Design started our community tourism service in 2013. The farm house accommodation has increased from zero to six, and totally 1300 FIT (Free Individual Travelers) visit the village of Keihoku. We believe tourism in 21st century is not sightseeing, but to live like locals. What we offer in our tourism is to share our life by having an experience of cooking, trekking, or even joining local party or festival. We also introduce a new way of work style, so that guests can fully immerse in another environment from their daily life.
